Most impressive rifles available – February 2015

These are the rifles and pistols that so far impressed me the most.
So here we go...
Benjamin Discovery 5.5mm

This is a very light weight PCP air rifle that can charged up to 2,000 PSI (137 bar) with a scuba tank or hand pump. Fully charged, this rifle can send a 14.3 grain, .22 caliber pellet up to 900 feet per second. This works out to approximately 26 ft/lbs!  What impressed me is that you can pump this rifle with minimal effort, get some decent power from it and it’s accurate. The other very impressive thing is the price. You simply cannot buy anything else in the price range that can compare to it. The only down side to it is that you need a separate adapter to fit a silencer, but they are available. And yes, you can fit a scope.

Sumatra Carbine 5.5mm
Size comparison : Sumatra Carbine (Top), Sumatra 500cc (Bottom)

This rifle is like Marmite, you either love or hate it. Some people don't like the cowboy looks, but for me it is just beautiful and by far my favourite rifle EVER. It is compact, light, insanely accurate and one of the most powerful rifles you can buy. It comes with 2 six shot magazines that never jams and the Winchester action allows you follow up shots as quick as you can operate the lever. It comes with open sights that is not well designed, but you can fit a scope. Power is adjustable, so you can turn it way down and use light weight pellets or you can crank it up and send 32gr pellets screaming downrange without loosing any accuracy. For everyday use, I turned mine down to about 34ft/lbs which gives me about 24 shots per fill.

WARNING, IT IS LOUD. I'm not talking about .22 rimfire loud, this sounds more like a large calibre rifle. Luckily there are some custom made silencers available (thanks Froggy) that makes it as quiet as any other silenced PCP.

As you can see, nothing wrong with the accuracy. Shot from FT sitting position

Snow Peak Air CP1  4.5mm / 5.5mm

I always used to say that the Crosman 2240 is the best CO2 pistol you can buy... well, not anymore.

The CP1 is just in a different league. The built quality is flawless and it is accurate. You get +/- 30 shots on a single cartridge and it reaches velocities of 500ft/s in 4.5mm and 400ft/s in 5.5mm. Some of the guys who like to tinker with their guns have been able to get higher velocities.

These 5 shot groupings at 15m was shot with a CP1 straight out of the box by my a friend of mine when he got his pistol.

Weihrauch HW25L

I think Weihrauch built these little wonders for the the dad who wants to teach his 5-6 year old how to shoot, and they did a brilliant job. When I first saw the HW25L I couldn't believe my eyes. It is small, almost to small to be a real airgun. I just had to test it. I loaded it... no effort at all, and took a shot a shot at a target set up in the back yard. PERFECT BULLS EYE. "Must be a fluke" I thought. Fired another shot at the same target and the hole in the paper target got slightly bigger. I ended up taking about 50 shots before the kids started bothering me to have a turn. In the end, my “you’re kidding, right?” attitude toward the HW25L changed to one of admiration. It seems to be the nearly perfect rifle for an afternoon of plinking in the back yard. It’s light, easy to cock, and every accurate. Best of all, it has Weihrauch quality built right into it.

Crosman 357 4.5mm
First of all, I'm not one for multi-shot CO2 pistols and revolvers. They shoot all over the place and have low power. But if i have to choose one, it would be the Crosman 357. They are cheaper than most of the other ones, maybe due to the fact that they are mostly made out of plastic, but it is by far the most accurate multi-shot handgun I have ever tested, and they give a lot more shots per fill than most other guns as well.

Benjamin 392 5.5mm

I have never been a fan of pump-up type rifles, probably because I once owned a Canon 727 which, for lack of better words, sucked. So when I first ordered the Crosman 392 I didn't expect much, despite the rifles legendary reputation in the USA. Man, was I wrong!

It is a stunning rifle, pictures don't do it justice. It is very plain... no aftermarket gimmicks, but you can do anything else than like this. It's like seeing a beautiful woman and then realising she's not even wearing makeup. The rifle don't have a rail for a scope, but the open sights are very good. So if you are into old school type rifles, you will love this. Pumping it is easier than other similar type rifles I've tested before, and despite the old design, I found the trigger to be smooth and predictable. Accuracy is good and it have enough power to take out some pests like rats etc. Unfortunately it is a bit loud and there's no way to fit a silencer on it.
